Meet Christopher Leone and Laura Harkcom!

Comic Book Resources just interviewed We Kill Monsters creators Christopher Leone and Laura Harkcom. Here’s a sample:

You say that “We Kill Monsters” was an idea you had, but was that idea initially conceived as a comic book, or was it more like, “This is cool – now what do we do with it?”

Laura Harkom: It was an idea, and we thought about what would be the best way to tell it. We originally created “The Lost Room” because we had only done features, and we initially thought of ["The Lost Room"] as a feature film. But as soon as we started to write down the ideas, we thought my God, this could never be a movie, it couldn’t even fit in a trilogy. Likewise with “We Kill Monsters.” We started writing our ideas and thought, look, the best medium for this would be a comic book.

We had just finished the TV show, and we were thinking TV, but realized budget-wise, you’d have to do almost an X-Files thing where you see the monster in one scene, at the very end of the episode. Or a piece, or a face. We didn’t want this to be that. We really wanted to do the monsters the way we want to do them, and the best way to do that is to draw them.

Did you approach Red 5 Comics, or did they approach you?

Leone: Our agent knew them a little bit and suggested we meet with them. We met with a bunch of publishers, but I think they had everything we wanted. It just kinda clicked, our style, and what they are about.

Harkom: They got it in a way that not everybody did. They understood the tone right off the bat, and what we were going for. [The series'] art is a little more old school than some of the more photo realistic stuff that is out there now. And they totally got that, and appreciated it.

For readers who may not be familiar with it, can you tell us what “We Kill Monsters” is about?

Leone: It’s about two brothers in this small town, who are mechanics. One night, stumbling out of a bar, they are attacked by a monster. One of the brothers, Jake, is bitten on his arm. When he wakes up the next morning, it’s transformed into this super-strong monster arm. And he’s addicted now to this brain fluid from monster brains.

Harkom: Because the monster DNA has mingled with his human DNA.

Leone: So now they have to keep hunting and killing monsters, in order to keep the brother alive.

Audio interviews, text interviews, and intelligent reviews!

We Kill Monsters #5 recently hit stores and the web is a better place for it!

First up, Ideology of Madness has posted an audio interview with Laura Harkcom and Christopher Leone. Forbidden Panel has a cool audio interview with the creators, too. Check them both out!

Next, we have The Pull Box which posted a text interview with both the writers, artist Brian Churilla, and colorist Ronda Pattison. Here’s a sample:

Eric: Is the final look of the book what was originally envisioned?

CHRIS: For us, I say yeah. I wanted likeable characters, killer monsters, lots of violence along with some funny parts. So I think this look was exactly right to capture that tone.

LAURA: Chris and I had never worked with Brian, Jeff, or Ronda before this book, so I was basing my expectations on Brian’s work from “The Engineer,” and Ronda and Jeff’s work in “Atomic Robo.” And then just crossing my fingers and hoping it would all come together in a way unique to our story in WKM. It ended up turning out cooler than I ever could have dreamed.

BRIAN: It ended up looking better than I had imagined it would. Ronda is a real wizard, and makes the artwork sing.

RONDA: I feel like I have a pretty clear idea now of how the book should look, but each issue is still a bit of a learning curve as I adapt to Brian’s art style and learn what Chris best responds to visually, etc. That’s just part of learning to work together and know each other as a team. I’m sure we’ll have it nailed by the last issue.

Visit the link above for more!

We also have a positive review of Issue #5 from Comic Book Jesus:

Simple, well-written tales are a rarity in these days of multi-character epics that require many months (and dollars) of commitment. That’s where Red 5 come along. Series like their Atomic Robo and Neozoic are brilliant, because they’re entertaining and accessible.

WKM’s writing partners Christopher Leone and Laura Harkcom have taken a simple premise (two brothers fight aliens in their hometown) and put enough familial drama, action and alien mystery to create an intriguing narrative. Penciller Brian Churilla has really been getting a lot of attention lately, thanks to BOOM!’s new The Anchor series (also good) and he does magic with the few lines he uses here.

Featured on CBR with Jeph Loeb!

At the Long Beach Comic Con this past weekend, We Kill Monsters creators Laura Harkom and Christopher Leone participated on a panel covering “Comic to Screen”. Also on the panel were Jpeh Loeb amd Robot Chicken’s Mike Falsolo. Comic Book Resources provided a write-up on the panel:

Scalera asked the duo what could be done with a comic that couldn’t be done with a television show such as ‘The Lost Room.’ Leone responded “Yeah, I come out of a visual effects background. I understand what it takes to build a CG monster. But in this [the comic's] case, you just tell the guy to draw it.

Harkom agreed, saying “You know, very early on we thought ’should this be a TV show?’ And then we thought, with the way budgets are for television shows today, we would never get to execute the monsters the way that we wanted them to be. But whatever you can imagine, you can have drawn for the same price as drawing any other page. So we decided to go the comic route, and we’re really glad we did.

Laughing, Leone said “And the insane thing about Hollywood is that the odds are, the chances of actually making it into a movie or something are probably ten times better as a comic book. Which is insane, right? Why shouldn’t it just be a script?

Laura Harkom and Christopher Leone’s “We Kill Monsters,” published by Red 5 ComicsWhen asked if, in their experience, Hollywood is looking at the comics field as an incubator, Leone answered “A lot of people say, well, it’s got pictures, it’s more like a movie. But I think that is a rationalization. I think they like that someone published it. Validated it. ‘Well, someone published it, it must be worth something.’” he said.
